Lectors proclaim the Word of god at all weekday and Sunday liturgies, and at both Our Lady of Pompeii and Sacred Heart Churches. This includes two scripture readings, the Prayer of the Faithful, and announcements at the conclusion of Mass. At Masses, where there is no music (primarily weekday Masses), they also read the Responsorial Psalm.
Lectors are assigned to Masses offered on Saturday evening, Sunday, and Holy Days. There is no specific person assigned for the weekday; however, lectors present at the Mass may volunteer their services. Lectors are expected to arrive at Mass ten-fifteen minutes early, enabling them to ensure that the readings are ready to review the pronunciation of names listed in the Prayer of the Faithful, and to participate in the opening procession.
Lectors are required to study and rehearse their readings prior to Mass. To assist each lector in this task, the parish provides a special workbook as a resource for understanding each reading, as well as for help with pronunciation. In addition, for lectors new to the ministry, a coaching session is provided.
Reader assignments are made in advance, generally for two months at a time. Lectors may select their preferred Mass, and have the opportunity to indicate their availability prior to scheduling. There is only one meeting annually. Lectors serve approximately once every seven or eight weeks.
Any adult or teen with a clear, strong speaking voice who is confident and comfortable talking in front of people is welcome to volunteer for this ministry. To do so, please contact the rectory office at 693-0119 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
